Visit the best of Concordia, KS during the beautiful month of April. The first stop is the National Orphan Train Museum to meet your step-on guide for the day. The museum takes you back to a forgotten time in our history when many children lived in terrible conditions in eastern cities; 200,000 children, during 70 years from 1853-1929, were relocated throughout the Midwest and Canada with the hope of being given an opportunity for a better live. Several books have been written and a PBS TV special was produced about the Orphan trains. Next, visit a WWII German POW Camp. Learn about the camp’s fascinating history during September 1942 to November 1945, including information about the Nazi officers in confinement, how the camp was run, and the life that existed there during the war. Later, view the largest carved wall mural in America. The wall is amazingly put together as a wondrous piece of sculptural architecture. The town’s people refer to the wall as the “Exquisite Gem on the Plains.” The three dimensional mural measures 140’ wide by 15’ in height and includes 6400 individually hand carved bricks. Your guide will provide a story about each of the events depicted on the wall. Marla’s Joy Tea House in downtown Concordia will provide a delicious lunch including a sandwich, salad, soup, dessert and beverage.

After lunch, receive a guided tour of the Nazareth Convent and Academy. A joyful and inspiring visit, the Motherhouse is a magnificent structure that offer living quarters to retired Catholic nuns. Even if one is not religious, the art and architecture collected all in this one place is a treasure to be seen and appreciated. Perhaps some of the most striking pieces are the beautiful stained glass windows. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Afterwards, visit the gift shop which includes artwork, jewelry, lace, afghans, quilts, dolls, greeting cards, and woodcraft. A special surprise stop will be included that involves, weather permitting, a wagon ride pulled by Belgian horses! A fast food dinner stop is planned for the evening meal.
