This course will serve as an introduction for beginners (costume-play) or cosplayers looking to improve or learn new skills. In this course you will be introduced to a brief history of cosplay, the more popular types of cosplay, how to draft your own cosplay patterns, how to use the different kinds of materials in cosplay, and have your own costume started or ready in time for the Anime, Comicon, and Cosplay season.

Session 2: Getting Started: Research and Pattern Mapping
Session 3: Material Gathering and Being A Savvy Shopper!
Session 4: Costume Design and Functionality
Session 5: Finishing Touches: Make-up, Wigs, Details, and How to Transform
Session 6: Final: Completion, Presentation, and Critique

After the first class, the student is responsible for purchasing their own materials for the cosplay they intend to make. The instructor will do their best to provide reference lists for different budget-friendly options to purchase said materials and is available via e-mail if the student has any questions about shopping for materials or costume construction.

Brittney Gohr

Brittney Gohr is also known as Buttery Rose Cosplay+ in the Midwestern cosplay community. She has won several awards for her skills in cosplay including craftmanship, convention floor, performance, and the coveted Best-In-Show at numerous conventions throughout the Midwest such as Anime Nebraskon and Planet Comicon. She has also been published in numerous articles and cosplay magazines for her many costumes and she takes great pride in her creativity, problem solving, and skill. Between these accolades and a total following of nearly 5,600 fans (and growing) across several social media sites including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, she has earned the respect and acknowledgement from her cosplay peers and convention personnel (and made plenty of friends from among those!) Self-proclaimed “Jack of all trades,” she is skilled in many facets and materials in the crafting of cosplay including fabrics & textiles, foam work, thermal plastics, and theatrical make-up & effects. She enjoys sharing her knowledge with the next generation of cosplayers and even seasoned veterans who may not be as knowledgeable in certain mediums. She likes watching these new cosplayers learn, grow, and blossom into the character they always wanted to be!
