This course explores the development of the film industry in Japan. Students learn about Japanese film's beginnings as an entrepreneurial curiosity, how the industry was shaped by World War II and the American Occupation, its commercial and artistic peak in the 1950s, and how socioeconomic events triggered the decline of the industry, which continues to this day.
