Feel like you’re in 19th century Holland by visiting the tulip festivities in a charming Dutch village called Orange City, located in northern Iowa. It’s an entertaining celebration of the best of small-town America – a tulip showcase for the multitude of visitors in this community’s rich Dutch heritage. Festivities include fun ethnic food treats, music and dancing by hundreds of children and adults in intricate authentic costumes, a special parade, an arts and crafts show, and thousands of gorgeous tulips in lanes lining avenues, parks, and small gardens throughout Orange City. The Tulip Town Bulb Company Gardens offers a colorful array of over 40 varieties of imported Dutch tulips! There will be an opportunity for you to place your tulip bulbs order for fall delivery. The morning tour begins at the Vogel windmill – a working replica of the mills in Holland, afterwards visit the lovely Century House and the Tulip Gardens (where bulbs can be ordered). Later experience how blocks of wood are formed into wooden shoes at the De Klompen Maker. To satisfy your hunger for lunch try the market area, food tent, the multitude of vendors, or the village’s cozy restaurants. Those hankering for special Dutch treats can try almond patties, Wilhelmina Peppermints, Stroopwafels layered with caramel, and Dutch fudge puppies which are like long johns dipped in chocolate and topped with whipped cream. Or find the line to a bakery’s supply of puffy corn-sized poffertjes. See a spectacular Dutch parade in the afternoon with your reserved seat! Enjoy viewing provincial costumes, the presentation of the Tulip Queen, her Royal Court, Dutch children’s games & singing, folk dancers, and colorful floats. Afterwards, you’ll be entertained by a Dutch song & dance performance in a cozy theater. Be sure to visit the Straatmarket for fun activities and bring comfortable shoes. See the Dutch Street Organ, one of only two in the USA, and more windmills for your enjoyment. There will be a morning restroom/coffee stop and an evening stop for fast food on our return trip. Cost paid to Metro is for the deluxe motor coach, the Dutch Parade Reserved Seating, the Century House tour, and Dutch Song & Dance Theater Performance. Bring money, including cash, for food and extras you might enjoy like horse drawn street tours or shuttles. Our deluxe motor coach departs promptly at 7:00 a.m. from Sarpy Center: park and meet the bus at the northeast parking lot. Return approximately at 9:00 p.m. No discount. Refunds will not be allowed within fourteen days of the trip. The trip leader is Kevin Kowskie.

Kevin Kowskie

Kevin Kowskie is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is passionate about travel and art. His artwork has been displayed at the College of St. Mary’s, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Durham Museum and has been included in a group show at the Joslyn Art Museum. Kowskie’s love for foreign travel and cultural enrichment goes back as far as he can remember. While traveling with his family to Rocky Mountain National Park as a child, he developed a keen desire to expand his journeys to distant lands, and the rest was history. After traveling through much of the United States as he got older, this ambition drew him to expand his travels on an international scale—discovering destinations in Canada, Mexico and a dozen European nations. In his early thirties, Kevin and a friend devoted two weeks every year to backpacking through Europe and visiting different nations and destinations via train. He loves encountering new cultures and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. After someone suggested to him that Omaha would appreciate seminars on European travel, Kowskie followed his passion to become a noncredit instructor on the subject for MCC. Planning, organizing and leading group tours are part of his favorite pastimes. Kowskie is currently a trip leader and coordinator for MCC’s Traveling Classrooms, sharing his experience and knowledge as part of the motivated Continuing Education staff.
