Join the residents of Madison County as they gather under the brilliant hues of autumn for the annual celebration, a time-honored tradition since 1970 of their historical covered bridges. During October’s second weekend the town comes alive with over 100 talented local artisans, food booths, music, and entertainment galore on two stages and more. Meet our informative step-on guide in Winterset, IA for a wonderful Storybook tour. It includes several of the world-famous Madison County bridges made famous by the book, ‘The Bridges of Madison County’. Bring your camera to capture some panoramic sights of the Roseman Covered Bridge. This is the famous structure which was filmed in the movie directed by Clint Eastwood. The Roseman is the bridge Robert Kincaid sought when he stopped at Francesca Johnson’s for directions; it is also where Francesca left her note inviting him to dinner. You’ll love the views here! Then return to Winterset for a special luncheon at the First United Methodist Church. Afterwards, feel the excitement touring the Madison County Bridge Festival grounds on your own. Next, visit the Madison County Historical Complex. See the charming 1856 Bevington House, the Madison County Historical Museum, and twelve buildings representing an era that has long passed at your own pace. There’s more! Watch a short civil war battle reenactment on the historical museum grounds at 4 pm. A fast food stop is planned on the journey home. Cost paid to MCC is for bus transportation, hearty luncheon, step-on guide for the Storybook Bridge tour, Madison County Historical Complex, & the festival admission ticket. Bring money for other meals and shopping. Our deluxe motor coach departs promptly at 7:00 a.m. from Sarpy Center; park and meet the bus at the northeast parking lot. Return is approximately 8:30 p.m. No discount. Refunds will not be allowed within 14 days of the trip. Trip leader is Kevin Kowskie.

Kevin Kowskie

Kevin Kowskie is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is passionate about travel and art. His artwork has been displayed at the College of St. Mary’s, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Durham Museum and has been included in a group show at the Joslyn Art Museum. Kowskie’s love for foreign travel and cultural enrichment goes back as far as he can remember. While traveling with his family to Rocky Mountain National Park as a child, he developed a keen desire to expand his journeys to distant lands, and the rest was history. After traveling through much of the United States as he got older, this ambition drew him to expand his travels on an international scale—discovering destinations in Canada, Mexico and a dozen European nations. In his early thirties, Kevin and a friend devoted two weeks every year to backpacking through Europe and visiting different nations and destinations via train. He loves encountering new cultures and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. After someone suggested to him that Omaha would appreciate seminars on European travel, Kowskie followed his passion to become a noncredit instructor on the subject for MCC. Planning, organizing and leading group tours are part of his favorite pastimes. Kowskie is currently a trip leader and coordinator for MCC’s Traveling Classrooms, sharing his experience and knowledge as part of the motivated Continuing Education staff.
