The Danish Villages of Elk Horn & Kimballton, IA will be hosting JuleFest. Both towns will be decorated for the holidays; the streets will be lined with Danish and American flags, and there will be opportunities to purchase Danish pastries, candies, and treats. The important elements of a Danish Christmas – good food, warm hospitality, flickering candles and other decorations will all be a part of your day. You’ll experience the following festive sites: the Danish windmill, the Museum of Danish America, Bedstemor’s House, and the Danish Countryside Vines and Wines for wine sampling. During your visit to the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn enjoy home-baked cookies, glogg, and coffee in the museum’s “hyggelig julestue”.  View exhibits such as Danish Christmas plates from past years and the piano which belonged to Vic Borg, the famous pianist/comedian. The museum’s gift shop offers Danish spreads and treats, the Annual Keepsake ornament and Christmas cards. The historic Danish Windmill built in 1848 and brought to Elk Horn from Denmark piece-by-piece will serve glogg and Danish cheese to visitors and have an old fashion Julemarked. Lunch will be on-your-own in Shelby, IA.

Bedstemor’s House - Danish for Grandmother’s House - will welcome you with a warm fire. The parlor’s Christmas tree will be decorated with homemade paper ornaments like Julehjerte, chains, fish, and roses. Later, visit a full-sized replica of “The Little Mermaid” statue of Copenhagen Harbor in Mermaid Park. A special trip will be made to the Danish Countryside Vines & Wines. The winery is located among the rolling hills of western Iowa. Tour the winery and sample their selection of white, blush, and red wines. Also, the winery offers a nice selection of fruit wines including Pretty Belle Peach, Blueberry Delight, and MillHouse Cran. For the evening, participate in Elk Horn’s annual JulesFest pancake supper and later enjoy a special performance at a local church. JuleFest is a great way to celebrate the opening of the Christmas season in the Danish Villages!
