What is the status of public art in the Midwest? Is the middle of the country a place that encourages or discourages large-scale artistic projects? Is public art only reserved for the urban spaces or has it branched out into the smaller towns of our mostly rural region? We will be looking into these questions and more, examining artistic trends throughout the Midwest, both contemporary and historical. Starting with the influence of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Regionalist School from the 1930s, we will examine the interplay between art, history, and locality as it relates to our often-overlooked region of the country. No art or art-historical background necessary.
