Vitame Vas! The town of Wilber graciously welcomes you to our nation’s Czech Capital for a day of celebration for their famous summer festival. Wilber is a unique ethnic community located 36 miles southwest of Lincoln, Nebraska. Czech communities from around the region help participate in this Czech Festival. The first thing that will greet you at Wilber is traditional Czech music filling the air on Main Street. Flowers in the sidewalk pots bring a friendly feeling to each visitor. The Czech language is remembered by the store front signs and citizen greetings on the streets. There will be a lot of activities going on throughout the day for your enjoyment. Enjoy an authentic Czech lunch with our group at Hotel Wilber. Watch an entertaining parade with participants dressed in traditional costume from the old country what once was Czechoslovak, listen to tradition polka music throughout the festival, and see a car show. We will also be visiting the Sunken Gardens, one of National Geographic's highest rated gardens in the United States. There will be time-on-your-own to shop in Frank’s Meat Market for kolache and Bohemian meat specialties made from original recipes, plus visit the many vendors selling Czech bakery specialties. Also, learn about Czech costumes at the Czech Craft Shop Tent and explore the three levels of the Czech Museum. The Czech Craft Shop Tent located on Third Street in the center of the business district, makes and sells Czech costumes. The volunteers still hand embroider the beautiful patterns on the vests, blouses, and aprons, plus they make several colors of skirts, and have long and short sleeve shirts and vests for men. The shop also features magnets, note cards, books, and many special gift items. You will have a most enjoyable day in Wilber! Afterwards, relax at a lovely local winery before heading back to campus! Note, you are welcome to bring a portable folding chair for watching the parade. Your chair should be labeled with your name and phone number and will be placed in the cargo bay of our motor coach during travel. Cost paid to MCC is for the deluxe motor coach, the Czech luncheon (which includes the price of the meal, tax, and gratuity), and the winery fee. (Must be 21 years of age to participate in the wine sampling). Other snacks and shopping are not included. Our deluxe motor coach departs promptly at 9:30 a.m. from MCC’s Sarpy Center; park and meet the bus at the northeast parking lot. Return is approximately 7:00 p.m. Sorry no discount. Trip leader: Kevin Kowskie. Moderate walking is required.

Kevin Kowskie

Kevin Kowskie is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is passionate about travel and art. His artwork has been displayed at the College of St. Mary’s, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Durham Museum and has been included in a group show at the Joslyn Art Museum. Kowskie’s love for foreign travel and cultural enrichment goes back as far as he can remember. While traveling with his family to Rocky Mountain National Park as a child, he developed a keen desire to expand his journeys to distant lands, and the rest was history. After traveling through much of the United States as he got older, this ambition drew him to expand his travels on an international scale—discovering destinations in Canada, Mexico and a dozen European nations. In his early thirties, Kevin and a friend devoted two weeks every year to backpacking through Europe and visiting different nations and destinations via train. He loves encountering new cultures and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. After someone suggested to him that Omaha would appreciate seminars on European travel, Kowskie followed his passion to become a noncredit instructor on the subject for MCC. Planning, organizing and leading group tours are part of his favorite pastimes. Kowskie is currently a trip leader and coordinator for MCC’s Traveling Classrooms, sharing his experience and knowledge as part of the motivated Continuing Education staff.
