Death profoundly changes the way we live our lives. It is the one phenomenon that is absolutely universal, and, for that reason, natural. Yet, it has been said that death and the sun are the two things that we cannot look upon with a steady eye. Our tendency is to avoid death or to deny it; we speak of it in euphemisms to disguise its harshness. However, life is, of course, defined by death. --Despite the universality of death, it has only been seen as a proper area of study in American universities for about the past three decades. Many professional schools that seek to prepare persons to work in the health care or helping professions continue to ignore death as a legitimate topic for study. This reflects a very human tendency to avoid the unpleasant; many physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, and members of the clergy find dealing with the realities of death to be among their greatest challenges. Unfortunately, they may face this challenge unprepared. All of us, ultimately, must deal with death: our own and that of others--Our objective in this course on death and dying is to view death from several different perspectives and to review literature from the fields of psychology, sociology, nursing, medicine, and ethics dealing with death and the process of dying. The desired outcome of the course will be a better understanding of the dying patient and his or her family, with a particular emphasis on improving the quality of care that we might be able to provide to dying people and their survivors. Students in the past have also found the course to be meaningful in their personal lives.
