Dive into the history of South Omaha, the “Magic City” of the Midwest. Focusing on the thirty years of independence from Omaha itself, we will examine South Omaha’s influence as the primary cattle market of the Great Plains. This class will examine the melting pot of cultures in South Omaha on the eve of annexation, the Greektown riot of 1909, and the influence of the “Big Four” meatpacking companies on the industrial and labor history of the region. Participants will also experience a guided tour of the MCC South Omaha Campus mural; a pictorial timeline of South Omaha that reflects many of the themes of this course.
